ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS A REPRISE OF
CHRISTOPHER THEOFANIDIS’ CREATION/CREATOR IN MARCH
ATLANTA SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA TO HOLD TWO
PERFORMANCES IN SYMPHONY HALL
ATLANTA – The Grammy® Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will appear on local and national stages during the month of March, including a prestigious end-of-month performance at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Music Director Robert Spano will lead the ASO premiere of Christopher Theofandis’ Dreamtime Ancestors and violin virtuoso Benjamin Beilman performing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto on three consecutive evenings. The March 2 and 4 performances at Atlanta Symphony Hall bookend an evening featuring the same program at the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall in Athens, Ga., on March 3.
On March 9 and 11, Conductor Michael Stern will lead a weekend of Russian masters featuring pianist Marc-André Hamelin performing the ASO premiere of Medtner’s Second Piano Concerto with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The Casual Friday series will continue on March 10 with an hour long performance featuring the Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky pieces.
The Family Concert Series will present Peter & the Wolf and Friends Michael Palmer conducting the Prokofiev favorite as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee and more on March 12 at 3 p.m. The program will be presented at an encore matinee at Kennesaw State University’s Bailey Performance Center on March 25.
Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski will lead a festive St. Patrick’s Day program on March 17 and 18 with a special performance by the Grammy®-nominated Irish-American group Cherish the Ladies, one of the world’s top Celtic bands.
On March 19 the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) will present its Crescendo Concert with ASYO Music Director Joseph Young conducting Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition. March 29 will feature both the ASO and ASYO for the Side-by-Side Concert lead by Young, providing student musicians the opportunity to sit with and learn from ASO musicians leading up to the concert.
The Orchestra wraps up March with an all-star reprise of Christopher Theofanidis’ Creation/Creator in Atlanta Symphony Hall lead by Spano and featuring soprano Jessica Rivera, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, tenor Thomas Cooley, baritone Nmon Ford, bass Evan Boyer and narrators Shannon Eubanks and Steven Cole, as well as the ASO Chorus on March 23 and March 25. Special scenography will be designed by the Woodruff Arts Center’s 2016-17 Phil Kent Creative Fellow Daniel Arsham and stage direction will be provided by James Alexander. The same ensemble will perform Creation/Creator at the 2017 SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on March 31.
