A Perfect Father’s Day in Douglasville/South Fulton

Ties, coffee mugs that say, “Best Dad Ever” or a new power tool.

These are the typical gifts many dads receive each year on the third Sunday in June.

Sure, he won’t complain but this year why not do something different? Instead of gifts, why not give him experiences. Something he can remember.

Don’t know where to start? Let me help, with some input from my husband (he came up with the food references!)

Let’s get started, flash forward to June 18, it’s Father’s Day!

My first thought would be to let him sleep in, after all it is his day. Realistically though, we all need to eat so our his day starts at Thumbs Up Diner in Douglasville. Never been? With six locations serving goodness, Thumbs Up is a friendly, diner type place that serves up huge Belgian waffles, delicious spuds (potatoes with onions and peppers) and more. Its popularity can sometimes cause long waits so the trick is to get there early if you want breakfast.

During breakfast, be sure to tell dad how much you appreciate and love him. Please be sure to chew your food before telling dad how great he is!

Ok, breakfast is over and it would be a wonderful time to walk off some of the delicious calories you just ate (my idea not my husband’s!).

Head over to Sweetwater Creek, which has wooded trails, streams, and a 215-acre lake. Have the kids pay the $5 parking fee in honor of dear old dad and the boat fee. Once on the paddle boat, let someone other than dad do the paddling while he sits back and relaxes.

Hopefully, you will still have enough energy to take a hike on the marked trails over to the rapids and the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. This is where dad can have a little bit of fun with the kids and quiz them on the history of the mill or the kids could surprise dad with what they already know about the mill (FYI - General Sherman ordered that the mill be destroyed during the Civil War).

By now, dad may be ready to relax, his way. Time to head back home where you can share the gifts you bought him (yes, the tie, the coffee mug that says, “best dad ever” and the most awesome power tool you could find.

Maybe a good idea to check with dad to see what he’s in the mood for dinner. If he wants to go out, why not grab a pizza from Oz Pizza in Fairburn? Or maybe dad would enjoy a sit-down Mexican meal. No problem, check right into Iztaccihuatl Mexican Restaurant, also in Fairburn.

Regardless of where you go or how you celebrate Father’s Day, just let dad do things he enjoys doing.
