The MacKid tooks a Field Trip

Tellus Science Museum

By Kimberly Bryant, Macaroni Kid DSF August 16, 2017

As a homeschooling mama, I'm always looking for new ways to educate and entertain my crew.  With the upcoming Solar Eclipse, I figured now would be a great time to visit the Tellus Science Museum.  I'm honestly not even sure how we have never been here.  If you're looking for a fantastic mini road trip to share a fun field couple of hours with your kids then keep reading!

The Tellus Museum sits about 30-45 mins outside of metro Atlanta (depending on traffic).  Up in Carterville, Ga (75N) this beautifully spacious Museum is well worth the drive.  The kids and I had a plan when we went.  We were going to spend x amount of time at the Museum before getting back on the road to beat rush hour traffic.  We parked, took a selfie and walked the grounds!  Then we went inside and our plan was all downhill from there.

We spent almost five hours in the Museum!  We explored space, volcanos, varying types of rock, earthquakes, the evolution of cars, prehistoric animals, and played in the most amazing kids area!  Now by kids area I mean, brightly colored, make a lot of noise, have a ball parents area and kids are allowed!

My daughter, Cherrie, said her favorite part was the Molecularum movie.  I have to admit we left knowing a lot more about the Periodic Table of Elements and it was super fun and cute.  It made so much of an impression that Cherrie began asking "Siri" questions about space and molecules on the ride home.  I'm convinced Marshall's favorite part was the various types of transportation in the CrossRoads exhibit.  As we approach his 16th birthday he's all about the cars so that exhibit was a hit for him.

Right outside of the Museum sits the West Virgina University Solar House.   As a Pastry Chef I think this was my favorite part of the trip.  Learning about how to make our homes more energy efficient was amazing.  Don't get me wrong the size of the fridge in this house was tiny in comparison to the two inside my home, but it was amazing to hear about the current innovation on solar technology.  The Solar House is the newest addition to the Museum and is open Thursday-Sunday from 1-4pm (and during special events).

Aside from our favorite parts were multiple other attractions:

Weinman Mineral Gallery

Collin Family My Big Backyard

Bentley Planetarium *Molecularium plays here* *Shows are an additional $3.50 for non members/$2.00 for members
