Theater review: Center for Puppetry Art’s “Charlotte’s Web”

For the first time ever, I made it to the Center for Puppetry Art’s to watch their new production, Charlotte’s Web. My infant and I watched Charlotte spin the words in her web - Humble, Radiant, Some Pig and Terrific Pig. I was nervous about sitting in the dark, in silence with a 9-month old baby. But, I found the environment to be accommodating for families with children of any age.  Many parents giggled along, more than children I believe, as the story unfolded.

While my son may not have been as attentive as the other children, the puppets on stage definitely caught his attention.  I instantly became hypnotized by jumping, walking and flipping puppets! I had no idea puppets could move the way they did! As Wilbur came into this world and grew exponentially in size and in his loving heart, I remember thinking just how special this story is. A story about friendship, love & life is what I saw on stage as Charlotte, Wilbur, Fern, the sheep, the Goose, the Gander and Templeton the rat was portrayed in a lifelike way by talented puppeteers.

Charlotte’s Web was a lively production. Templeton the rat was funniest with his witty personality. The puppets and set were awesome, beautiful and bright enough to keep the children focused and waiting to see what was next. After the show, families were invited to an after show, create-a-puppet workshop. All the supplies were neatly organized and placed for parents and children to build a goose. My son was not exactly ready to build a puppet but I watched other families build the goose. It was an exciting hour and a half! As a result, I decided to purchase a family membership! There is something for each child of mine ages 12, 5, and almost 1 to enjoy.

Charlotte’s Webb runs at Center For Puppetry Arts through October 22.  The Center is located at 1404 Spring Street NW at 18th Atlanta, GA 30309. Parking is easily accessible, and a ramp available for stroller accommodations.
